I had an enlightening conversation with a great friend, Kemp Boyd. We talked about the difference between being and doing. It was a tough conversation. Usually we define ourselves by what we do, but what we do is not who we are. They're separate. Kemp brought up Joshua 1:6 where God says to Joshua, "Be strong and courageous..." Kemp went on to say that before God says "DO" he says "BE". Have you thought of your life this way? Who am I if you take away what I do? This concept has changed my life, and I hope it changes yours.
Many people live and die without realizing who they are. As a former baseball player that competed at a high level, I'll admit, my identity was wrapped up in what I did. I was defining myself by how well I competed. Guess what? Not only was that unstable, but my life as a baseball player ended. I was forced to ask myself, "Who am I now?" Still fighting to find my identity in what I do, not who I am. Many times when an athlete is done competing most of them fall into depression. This is because they built their lives around sports alone. I am not saying it’s a bad thing to love sports and make it a big part of your life. But sports is what you do, it's not who you are. So who are you when you're not training or competing? What's important to you beyond being an athlete? What do you value? Ultimately, who are you? If you're like me it's not a quick answer. It takes some time and reflection to really think about "who I am" apart from "what I do". My hope is that you're able to find yourself and JUST BE.
You are loved.
